  • Provides step-by-step guidance for performing the BIL IOL technique
  • Highlights all aspects of the BIL IOL procedure including clinical pearls and pitfalls
  • Edited by the pioneer of the procedure, with contributions from leading ophthalmic experts
This ophthalmic resource provides a complete overview of the bag-in-the-lens implantation technique which was pioneered by the book's editor, Prof Marie-Jose Tassignon. The technique which was first developed for the paediatric population, has had overwhelmingly positive outcomes in reduction of posterior capsular opacification and stability and is now used as a primary approach in all patients with cataract.

The bag-in-the-lens implant is a monofocal spherical hydrophilic intraocular lens comprised of a 5mm bi-convex optic with two elliptical plane haptics. When the implant is positioned into place, the posterior haptics slide under the posterior capsule and the anterior haptics rest on top of the anterior capsule. The end result is that the bag-in-the-lens implant sandwiches the two layers of capsule and seals the lenticular epithelial cells in the interhaptic groove.

These steps required to achieve BIL implantation are presented in the book in a clear, concise format with illustrations to guide the reader to effectively perform this surgery. New and experienced ophthalmic surgeons will find this guide to be an indispensable resource for utilizing this technique to successfully treat adult and paediatric cataract patients in their daily clinical practice.
